The two most common underground storage tank sizes for Texas gas stations are 32,000 and 40,000 gallons. Both are UL-certified double-wall tanks. Both work. The question is which one is right for your site — and getting it wrong in either direction costs you money.

Too small and you're paying for tanker deliveries every few days. Too large and you're tying up capital in inventory and dealing with a bigger excavation footprint than you need. Here's how to think through it.

The Core Calculation: Throughput

Start with how many gallons per day your station will sell. For a new build, use your market study projections. For an existing station, pull your last 90 days of ATG data.

The general rule: size your tank so deliveries come every 5–7 days under normal demand. More frequent than that and your delivery cost per gallon goes up. Less frequent and you're carrying excess inventory.

The Compartment Breakdown

Both sizes are triple-compartment tanks — allowing you to store regular, mid-grade (or E85), and diesel separately in one tank body.

The middle compartment is the difference — that's your regular unleaded volume. If regular is 70%+ of your sales (typical for most Texas stations), the extra 8,000 gallons in the 40K tank goes directly toward extending your fill interval.

Site Footprint Considerations

The 40,000-gallon tank is longer. Specifically:

That 10-foot difference matters on tight urban sites. If you're working with a constrained lot, the 32K may be your only option regardless of throughput projections. Always run the site layout with your civil engineer before committing to a tank size.

Urban sites in Houston and DFW: We've placed 32K tanks on sites where the excavation leaves less than 8 feet to the property line on one side. On those projects, a 40K tank simply doesn't fit without an easement or variance. Know your lot dimensions before you price your order.

Price Difference

Expect to pay roughly 15–22% more for the 40,000-gallon tank over the 32,000-gallon equivalent. Freight and installation costs are similar — you're already mobilizing the same excavation crew for either size. The marginal cost of the larger tank is mostly in the steel and HDPE material.

Run a 5-year delivery cost savings calculation: if the 40K saves you 8 additional deliveries per year at $350 per delivery, that's $2,800/year — your payback on the tank price difference is typically 3–4 years at a busy station.
